THE ENVIRONMENT / EXCURSIONS

The  Middle-Rhine region respectively the Rhine valley is since June 2002 on the list of the World culture heritage.  And that is good to be understood, for this meandering valley, flanked by numerous steep and rugged rockies, is the picturesque background for unforgetable holidays. Here is the homeland of Loreley  and here you have the highest density of important medieval military buildings (Burgen). Their names - Stahleck, Schönburg, Marksburg, Sooneck, Reichenstein, Rheinstein, Ebernburg, Pfalzgrafenstein, which is on a small island in the middle of the river, and many others, are known all over the  world.  For the active tourists there are numerous possibilities to discover the region on walking. The forests and the adjoining vineyards cover over  thousands of acres a  network of well guided foot-paths.

Those, which are (no longer) such sporting types,  can stay on the farm and make it themselves comfortable on the terrace, or they can simply intersect the countryside by car, getting acquainted  with numerous interessting.places. Also the Gutsschänken und Straußwirtschaften (farms and houses of the wine-growers), will welcome you for a short break, offering the famous Rhine wine accompanied by local specialties from the home-kitchen. Do visit the small villages and towns, having their origin in the wine culture. You will be surprised of the beauty of the half-timbered houses built along the river bank and along the smaller brooks, that take you into the sidevalleys.  First of all you should visit the little town of Bacharach, which is one of the most touristic places in the municipal of Rhein-Nahe. The medieval townview,  with the old walls and towers, the castle Stahleck, the gothic chapell Werner, as well as the ruine Stahlberg in the quarter of Steeg, is since ages and ages an attraction for visitors from all over the world.  Worth visiting in Bacharach are furthermore: Altes Haus, Marktplatz (market-place), Alter Posthof, Ev. Kirche St. Peter (protestant church St.Peter), Zollhof met kath. Kirche St. Nikolaus (katholic church St.Nicolas), Kurpfälzische Münze (the former mint); Kurpfälzer Amtskeller (todays townhall)), and all the lovely half-timbered houses of the town and its quarters Steeg, Medenscheid, Neurath en Henschhausen.

Naturally a boat-excursion on the Rhine is very romantic. There is a wide offer of different trips to various places and sailing with a ship of the white fleet is an unforgettable experience for everyone. Even in the evening you can make such a trip. The ships are illuminated then and on board you can have a complete meal or just a snack with a beer or a glass of wine. There is music and you.will undoubtedly become in the mood for dancing. Shorter of course is a passage with one of the car-ferries, that every 20 minutes passengers bring from one side of the river to the other.
